Men’s Health Week Feature Article - written by Dee Arnold Laguz Wellness

Our bodies are amazing! Like the finest highly tuned machines when in balance the human body is capable of super intelligence and feats. I love bodies! They never cease to amaze & fascinate me. Unlike machines they are very forgiving and often give out much better performance than the fuel and programming received merits. However as with any machine, inadequate fuel and abuse hastens break-down and the scrap heap!

Just like your car, your body needs the highest grade fuel, regular maintenance and time out to cool down and spark up ready for the next trip. When meals are skipped, sleep is inadequate and work schedules become too demanding the body becomes slow and sluggish. Stress slows down brain function & digestion. Your body will begin to hurt; becoming painful & unresponsive.  Eating on the run or infrequently doesn’t allow digestive enzymes to break down food into a usable form inhibiting  the bodies ability to absorb nutrients and convert them to high grade fuel for hard working, busy bodies.

Dee’s tips for more efficient pit stops :-

  • Have a glass of water on rising – yes, before you run out the door to work!

  • Have an extra water for each coffee & alcoholic drink during the day – always carry a glass or steel water bottle with you – drink it & refill regularly!

  • Most bakeries & take away cafés offer wholesome soups – grab a soup instead of coffee on your way to work or at morning tea- especially if you have not had breakfast.

  • Yogurt is gut friendly, easily available & user friendly – keep some in the fridge at work – choose a natural variety containing gut friendly bacteria.

  • A grab-bag of dried fruits & nuts in your pocket will top you up when the ‘empty’ signs are flashing – keeping your active brain, eyes & reflexes clear & primed.

  • Eating regularly, that is within each 2 hours (even if its just an apple or banana), will not only pump up your performance it will avoid a low sugar crisis leading to carbs cravings so you will instinctively reach for protein rather than sugar & grease.

  • Too tired to cook… drop into a deli on your way home; most supply quality pre cooked fresh dinners ready to heat. Plan food & rest stops in your diary.

  • Smile lots, play with your 5year old & GET SOME SLEEP.

Feeling unsupported? It starts with you! Get the self nurture habit & start smiling!
